Department of English

About the Department

       English Department has been one of the supporting departments since the Myanmar Maritime University was first set up in 2002. Previously, Myanmar Maritime University used to be in the compound of Myanmar Mercantile Marine College in Sinmalike, Kamaryut Township for about two years. Now Myanmar Maritime University is located in Thilawa, Thanlyin and English Department is in Room 121 of Building 1 in Myanmar Maritime University. The faculty members are carrying out teaching English, the main task of English Department.
       Currently, the Department of English not only offers formal courses but also provides such services as spoken English courses for the staff of the University and the Minister's Office. In addition, it offers liaison, translation and interpretation services to the university. Some teachers from the department also have to carry out in the International ceremonies and university ceremonies as the masters of ceremonies.
       There are four academic staff and one office staff in the department.

Aims and Objectives

Reading Skill

  • To promote student's interest in language learning by designing the course which includes marine knowledge as well as simplified scientific passages.
  • To develop reading strategies so that they can read and understand texts and reference books related to their respective subjects.

Listening and Speaking Skills

  • To develop their listening skill in understanding talks and lectures given through the medium of English and developing speaking skill by encouraging them to discuss what they hear.

Writing skill

  • To develop their study skills so that they can construct sentences, take notes and write summaries as well as essays.
  • To make them have confidence in their writing ability so as to promote and strengthen their writing skill.

Quality Objective (Department)

  • To review all courses at least once in each academic year.
  • To train new appointed teaching staff every three months if there is the recruitment of teachers to the English department.
